Investing.com -- U.S. President Donald Trump has paused tariffs on Canada after meeting and reaching a tentative agreement with Canada's Justin Trudeau Monday afternoon.

"Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together," Trudeau said.

Over the weekend, Trump announced 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico and 10% on China. Canada oil was given a lower 10% tariff.

Earlier Monday, Trump announced a 30-day pause with Mexico after the country agreed to Trump's demands for more troops on the southern border.

Trudeau said Canada will be putting 10,000 frontline personnel on the U.S.-Canada border to protect it. In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar.

Overall, Canada is implementing a $1.3 billion border plan.

"I just had a good call with President Trump. Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl," Trudeau said on X. " Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border."
