Trump orders creation of US space academy for military use

Investing.com -- President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday to establish a US space academy during a visit to Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The academy will serve the United States Space Force, NASA, and the civilian spaceflight industry, Trump said. He compared the planned institution to existing military academies at West Point and Annapolis, stating it will "attract, train and graduate the very best of our nation."

Trump signed the order alongside NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. The president also honored the Artemis II crew for its flight around the moon earlier this year during the visit.

The location of the academy has not been determined. Trump indicated that Senator Ted Cruz of Texas has advocated for the facility to be placed in his state.

The president mentioned the planned 2028 Mars mission, which is set to deploy a nuclear-powered, interplanetary spacecraft. Trump created the Space Force as a separate military branch during his first term.

Trump arrived in Houston on Thursday for a Republican fundraiser as the party prepares for November midterm elections.
