Trump nominates Brett Matsumoto to lead BLS, WSJ reports
Investing.com -- President Donald Trump has selected Brett Matsumoto, a veteran economist within the Bureau of Labor Statistics, to lead the agency as its next commissioner, according to reporting from The Wall Street Journal. The decision aims to fill a leadership vacuum at the government’s primary statistical body.
The agency has remained without a permanent chief since August, following the high-profile dismissal of its previous leader, Erika McEntarfer. That ouster was reportedly driven by the president's dissatisfaction with data that highlighted unfavorable trends in the domestic labor market.
Matsumoto brings a deep institutional background to the role, having served as an economist at the BLS since 2015. He recently completed a temporary assignment with the White House Council of Economic Advisers, marking a rare stint outside the career civil service.
Before his recent time at the White House, Matsumoto had not worked in any political capacity, according to The Journal's report. He earned his doctorate in economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill the same year he joined the agency.
The nomination represents a shift toward internal expertise for an organization tasked with publishing critical indicators like inflation and unemployment rates.
