Trump considering exit from North American trade deal, report says
Investing.com -- President Donald Trump is privately discussing the possibility of withdrawing from the North American trade agreement, according to a report from Bloomberg News, citing people familiar with the matter who spoke anonymously about internal discussions.
Trump has asked aides about potential consequences of exiting the agreement he signed during his first term, though he hasn’t definitively indicated he will do so.
When asked about these discussions, a White House official described Trump as always seeking better deals for Americans and said speculation about potential actions before a presidential announcement was baseless.
An official from US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer’s office stated that simply renewing the 2019 terms wasn’t in the national interest. The administration plans to keep Trump’s options open while addressing identified issues through negotiations.
Both officials spoke anonymously and didn’t directly address whether Trump was considering an exit from the trade pact.
The US-Mexico-Canada Agreement faces a mandatory review before a possible extension on July 1. What was expected to be a routine process has become a contentious negotiation, with Trump demanding additional trade concessions from both countries and pressing them on unrelated issues including migration, drug trafficking, and defense.
