Trump calls for new, improved nuclear treaty with Russia

Investing.com -- U.S. President Donald Trump announced Thursday that the United States will not renew the New START treaty with Russia, which expires today, on February 5, 2026.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump called for a "new, improved, and modernized Treaty" instead of extending what he described as "a badly negotiated deal" that is "being grossly violated."

The New START treaty, which limits strategic nuclear arms between the United States and Russia, was the last remaining major nuclear arms control agreement between the two countries.

Trump highlighted his administration's military investments, stating he "completely rebuilt" the U.S. military during his first term, including nuclear weapons modernization and the creation of Space Force.

He also claimed credit for preventing nuclear conflicts "between Pakistan and India, Iran and Israel, and Russia and Ukraine."

The president emphasized that the United States is "the most powerful Country in the World" and said his administration continues to rebuild the military "at levels never seen before," including the addition of battleships he described as "100 times more powerful than the ones that roamed the Seas during World War II."
