Trump announces three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine

Investing.com -- President Donald Trump announced a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine via a Truth Social post on Friday. The pause in hostilities is scheduled to take place on May 9th, 10th, and 11th.

Trump stated that the ceasefire includes a suspension of all kinetic activity and a prison swap involving 1,000 individuals from each country. He noted that the request was made directly by him and agreed upon by President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The timing aligns with Victory Day, a commemoration of World War II that holds significant historical weight for both nations. Trump characterized the move as a potential "beginning of the end" for the long and deadly conflict.

Negotiations to end the major war are reportedly continuing, with Trump claiming that parties are getting closer to a resolution every day. This announcement follows a period of intense volatility and conflicting proposals regarding a pause in combat.

Prior to this development, President Zelenskyy had floated a cessation starting May 6 in response to a more limited Russian proposal. However, the Ukrainian leader said on Thursday that Russian forces had continued to disregard earlier ceasefire attempts with drone and missile strikes.

Zelenskyy emphasized the necessity of a lasting settlement over temporary pauses during a statement reported on by Reuters Thursday. "There is a need to establish peace, rather than running around the world’s capitals begging for a pause on May 9. We need peace," he said.
