Trump administration said to mull total oil blockade on Cuba
Investing.com -- The Trump administration is considering new strategies to push for regime change in Cuba, including a complete blockade on oil imports to the island nation, according to a Politico report on Friday.
The potential escalation, which would go beyond President Donald Trump’s previous announcement about stopping Venezuelan oil shipments to Cuba, has reportedly gained support from some administration officials critical of the Cuban government, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
While no final decision has been made, a total oil blockade could be among several options presented to President Trump aimed at ending Cuba’s communist government.
Last week, Trump stated that the U.S. would halt Cuba’s imports of oil from Venezuela, which has historically been Cuba’s primary crude supplier. The newly considered measures would represent a significant expansion of that policy by blocking all oil shipments to the Caribbean nation.
The administration’s increasingly confrontational rhetoric on Cuba comes just weeks after the U.S. military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of the country’s authoritarian leader Nicolas Maduro.
