Trump: need Greenland, but won’t use force

Investing.com -- U.S. President Donald Trump told world leaders at the Davos economic forum in Switzerland on Wednesday that the United States is the only nation capable of securing Greenland, renewing his administration’s interest in acquiring the Danish territory, but ruled out using force.

During his address, Trump expressed "tremendous respect for Greenland and Denmark" while arguing that Greenland sits "undefended in a key strategic location" that is vital to U.S. national security interests.

The president recounted historical U.S. involvement with Greenland, stating that America "set up bases on Greenland for Denmark" and "fought for Denmark" in the past. He claimed the U.S. "saved Greenland" and "gave it back to Denmark after World War Two," but suggested Denmark has been "ungrateful" since then.

Trump announced he is "seeking immediate negotiations to discuss acquisition of Greenland" and assured attendees that such a move "would not be a threat to NATO" but would instead "enhance the alliance’s security."

"We probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force, where we would be, frankly, unstoppable, but I won’t do that," Trump said, adding, "That’s probably the biggest statement I made, because people thought I would use force, but I don’t have to use force. I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force."
