Investing.com -- President Donald Trump expressed optimism Wednesday about reaching an agreement on Greenland, following high-level meetings between U.S. officials and Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers.
"I think something will work out," Trump said regarding Greenland, which he described as "very important for the national security, including of Denmark."
The comments came after Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance at the White House. According to reports, fundamental differences remain between the parties over the Arctic territory.
Trump emphasized U.S. military capabilities as a key factor in the discussions, stating that Denmark would be unable to defend Greenland against potential Russian or Chinese occupation. "The problem is there’s not a thing that Denmark can do about it if Russia or China wants to occupy Greenland, but there’s everything we can do," he said.
The president referenced recent events involving Venezuela as evidence of American military strength, saying, "You found that out last week with Venezuela."
Despite the ongoing disagreements, Trump maintained that the U.S. has "a very good relationship with Denmark" while also asserting that he "can’t rely on Denmark" regarding Greenland’s security. He added plainly, "We need it," referring to the strategic Arctic territory.
Trump indicated he would be briefed soon on the outcome of Wednesday’s meeting.
