Investing.com -- Power technology companies face a complex operating environment heading into third-quarter 2026 earnings season, with four key variables shaping the sector's outlook, according to an Oppenheimer note from analyst Colin Rusch. While broad-based growth continues across the industry, the firm expects mixed results and guidance as companies navigate challenging macroeconomic conditions. Oppenheimer advocates selective trading positions with exposure to power management and labor savings solutions, highlighting four stocks as top picks.
The sector faces headwinds from rising material costs driven by strong demand growth in utility-scale and distributed power, tight construction labor markets due to data center buildout, elevated interest rates impacting project economics, and ongoing policy changes favoring domestic manufacturing. U.S. wholesale power prices remained sharply higher year-over-year in PJM, up 42%, and SPP, up 23%, despite a mid-single-digit decline in natural gas prices. Construction wage growth accelerated to 4.4% year-over-year, with electrical and powerline workers seeing even steeper increases of 7.3% and 7.7%, respectively.
1. GE Vernova LLC (NYSE: GEV) - Oppenheimer's top pick in the power technology sector benefits from Executive Order 14420, which bans bulk power equipment imports from China. The firm sees potential for this policy to add pricing power for the company as domestic manufacturing preferences strengthen.
2. American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: AMSC) - The second-ranked stock also stands to gain from the bulk power equipment import ban from China. Oppenheimer views AMSC as positioned to capitalize on the shift toward domestic suppliers in the power infrastructure market.
3. Shoals Technologies Group Inc (NASDAQ: SHLS) - Highlighted as a key provider of in-field labor efficiency solutions, SHLS ranks third among Oppenheimer's picks. With construction labor costs continuing to rise and electrical worker wages growing 7.3% year-over-year, the firm sees the company's labor-saving capabilities as increasingly valuable.
4. Ormat Technologies Inc (NYSE: ORA) - Rounding out Oppenheimer's top picks, ORA is positioned to benefit from the selective trading environment favoring companies with outsized exposure to power management solutions as the sector navigates choppy macroeconomic conditions.
