Top Biotech Stock: Guggenheim Names Surrozen as Best Pick
Investing.com -- Guggenheim Securities has identified Surrozen, Inc. as its top pick in the biotechnology sector, assigning a Buy rating with a price target of $42.00. The firm hosted management from Surrozen to discuss recent developments in retinal vascular disease treatments and the company's clinical pipeline.
Guggenheim views Surrozen as significantly undervalued at approximately $730 million market capitalization. The investment thesis centers on the company's lead drug candidate, SZN-8141, which combines Wnt agonism with anti-VEGF therapy in a single molecule. Management positions this drug as a premium first-line biologic benchmarked against Vabysmo.
1. Surrozen, Inc. (SRZN)
Guggenheim's top biotechnology pick focuses on retinal vascular disease treatments. The firm sees 2027 as a critical year as the company advances SZN-8141 into the Phase Ib/IIa DUET study, with initial data expected in the second half of 2027. This represents the first test of whether the Wnt and anti-VEGF combination can deliver additive benefit on efficacy and durability. Management discussed key takeaways from Merck's BRUNELLO study, which validated Wnt agonism as the first non-VEGF mechanism in nearly two decades to achieve non-inferiority against anti-VEGF in a pivotal trial. Surrozen's SZN-8141 is a tri-specific, bifunctional antibody with two arms activating Wnt plus an anti-VEGF arm using the Eylea sequence. The company plans to position SZN-8141 as a first-line, premium biologic against current bispecific antibodies. Key catalysts over the next 24 months include initiation of the Phase Ib/IIa DUET study by year-end 2026, topline data from that study in second half 2027, and IND clearance for wholly owned SZN-8143 in first half 2027.
Guggenheim's valuation of $42 per share is based on probability-adjusted sum-of-the-parts NPV analysis using a 10% discount rate. The analysis includes probability-adjusted NPV of SZN-8141 in retinal vascular disease at 25% probability of success, the company's pipeline and technology value, and anticipated year-end 2027 net cash position.
