Tether adds 14 tons of gold in Q2 as buying speeds up
Investing.com -- Tether purchased 14 tons of gold for its reserves during the three months ending in June, bringing its total holdings to 146 tons valued at $18.8 billion, according to the company's quarterly attestation released Thursday.
The purchase marks a pickup in buying activity for the crypto company after it acquired 6 tons in the first quarter. Tether had bought more than 21 tons in the final three months of 2025.
The company now ranks as the largest known holder of gold outside of banks and nation states.
Tether issues USDT, the world's largest dollar-pegged stablecoin with approximately $185 billion in circulation. The firm generates revenue by accepting dollars in exchange for USDT and investing those funds in Treasury securities and other assets including gold.
Gold prices fell during the quarter as the Middle East conflict drove up bond yields, creating unfavorable conditions for the non-yielding metal.
The company added nearly $500 million worth of new USDT tokens during the second quarter.
Tether reported net operating profit of about $1.5 billion for the second quarter. The firm had posted net profit of $4.9 billion in the same period a year earlier.
