Tesla faces NHTSA probe over FSD traffic violations

Investing.com -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system following reports of traffic safety violations affecting an estimated 2.9 million vehicles.

The federal safety regulator identified several incidents where Tesla vehicles using FSD violated traffic laws, most commonly by running red lights and changing lanes into oncoming traffic. Some of these violations have resulted in crashes, including incidents that caused injuries.

NHTSA specifically noted it has received six reports of Tesla vehicles approaching intersections with red traffic signals, continuing through against the light, and subsequently colliding with other vehicles in the intersection. Four of these crashes reportedly resulted in injuries.

The agency expressed particular concern about potentially repeatable violations, citing multiple incidents where Tesla cars continued through red lights at the same intersection in Maryland.

As part of its investigation, NHTSA will assess whether Tesla’s system provides adequate warning or sufficient time for drivers to respond when the self-driving system takes unexpected actions.
