Investing.com -- TSMC and Sony Group announced Tuesday they will establish a $4.69 billion joint venture to develop and manufacture next-generation image sensors in southern Japan, with mass production scheduled to begin in 2029.
Sony will hold the controlling stake in the partnership and invest 465 billion yen ($2.92 billion), while TSMC will contribute 282 billion yen, the companies said in a joint statement.
The new entity, named Advanced Vision Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp, will be located in Kumamoto, where TSMC operates its Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing chip plant.
The joint venture will function as a central facility for developing and producing image sensors for smartphones using advanced manufacturing technology, the companies said.
Beyond the investments from Sony and TSMC, the companies said additional funding needed to reach the planned production capacity is being considered with the expectation that Japanese government support will be available.
