Senate will vote on SAVE America Act next week, says Thune

Investing.com -- Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Thursday that the Senate will vote next week on the SAVE America Act, though the legislation is expected to fail without changes to the filibuster rule.

The voter-ID bill, backed by President Donald Trump, would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and photo ID to cast a ballot. Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate, but the filibuster requires 60 votes on most measures.

"I can't guarantee an outcome on this legislation, but I can guarantee that we are going to put Democrats on the record," Thune said.

The South Dakota Republican supports the legislation but has rejected calls to amend the filibuster, saying changing Senate procedure could have unintended consequences. Speaking from the Senate floor Thursday, he made no mention of changing the chamber's rules.

Democrats have vowed to oppose the bill. The House advanced the measure last month on a mostly party-line vote, with Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas as the lone Democrat to support it.

Trump and GOP hardliners have pushed for months for a change to the Senate filibuster rule to ensure passage. Trump said in a Truth Social post Sunday that the bill "must be done immediately" and "supersedes everything else."

"I, as President, will not sign other Bills until this is passed," Trump said.
