Sam Bankman-Fried files request for new trial from prison
Investing.com -- Sam Bankman-Fried, the now infamous co-founder of cryptocurrency exchange FTX, has filed a request for a new trial.
The motion was dated February 5 but was officially docketed Tuesday in Manhattan federal court. Bankman-Fried filed the request pro se, meaning he is representing himself in this matter.
In his filing, Bankman-Fried, who is serving a 25-year prison sentence for fraud related to FTX's collapse, argues that new witness testimony could refute the prosecution's case against him. This request is separate from a formal appeal of his 2023 conviction.
Bankman-Fried was convicted on all seven counts of fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering in the case of United States v. Bankman-Fried. On March 28, 2024, he received his 25-year prison sentence and was ordered to forfeit $11 billion
