OpenAI to establish largest research hub outside US in London
Investing.com -- OpenAI announced on Thursday that it plans to make London its largest research hub outside the United States. The company behind ChatGPT cited Britain's technology ecosystem as an ideal environment for investing in and developing new artificial intelligence systems.
Mark Chen, OpenAI's research chief, said the country's combination of talent, leading universities and globally respected scientific institutions provides advantages in a sector that governments worldwide consider strategically important.
The expansion aligns with Britain's efforts to position itself as an AI leader and attract investment from major model developers. Governments are competing to host cutting-edge research facilities as the artificial intelligence sector grows.
Technology minister Liz Kendall described OpenAI's expansion in London as a significant vote of confidence. Kendall said in a statement that the move reaffirms the UK's global leadership as a destination for AI innovation that is both safe and transformative.
OpenAI did not provide specific details about the plan, including the size of any investment or the number of jobs the hub would create.
