OpenAI launches health feature in ChatGPT for US users

July 23, 2026 1:07 PM EDT

Investing.com -- OpenAI rolled out a new health feature in ChatGPT on Thursday that allows users in the United States to connect their medical records and health data to the artificial intelligence chatbot.

The feature enables users to link Apple Health data and medical records from supported US hospital systems, One Medical, and Function Health to ChatGPT. The company said more than 300 million people use ChatGPT weekly for health-related questions.

Users can now ask ChatGPT to compare lab results with prior tests, summarize changes since appointments, or analyze how sleep and activity patterns relate to their routines. The feature is available to logged-in ChatGPT users aged 18 and older in the US on web and iOS platforms across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro subscription plans.

OpenAI said early testing showed that more than 70% of health-related conversations took place outside a dedicated health space, leading the company to integrate the feature across all ChatGPT conversations. Users must grant permission before ChatGPT can access connected health information.

The company deployed GPT-5.6 Sol for paid users, which it described as its strongest model for health tasks. Free users have access to GPT-5.5 Instant. OpenAI worked with physicians to develop evaluations measuring accuracy, safety, communication, and completeness. GPT-5.6 Sol outperformed GPT-5.5 on HealthBench Professional, an evaluation of AI performance on health tasks.

OpenAI said connected medical records and Apple Health information are not used to train its foundation models or target advertisements. All ChatGPT conversations are encrypted at rest and in transit, with additional encryption protections for health information.

Users can disconnect their health information at any time. When disconnected, data synced from that source is deleted from OpenAI's systems within 30 days. The feature is not yet available in Codex.
