Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) has completed a government-led critical design review for the Block II upgrade of the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft, according to a company press release. The milestone clears the path for integration and testing to begin immediately, with delivery of Block II aircraft planned by the end of the decade.
The Block II upgrade involves a comprehensive overhaul of the platform's mission system software and hardware. Northrop Grumman says the upgrade will use a modular open systems approach and commercial off-the-shelf products to reduce costs and support long-term fleet sustainment.
The company plans to integrate the Block II upgrade into the E-2D's active production line for new aircraft, as well as retrofit existing fleet aircraft.
Janice Zilch, vice president and program manager for the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye at Northrop Grumman, said: "Completing the Block II critical design review reflects the dedication and expertise of our team and partners. This upgrade strengthens the E-2D's suite of capabilities, enhancing situational awareness, reducing crew workload and paving the way for future technology."
The E-2D Advanced Hawkeye is an airborne early warning and battle management platform built for the U.S. Navy. The program supports more than 4,000 jobs at 411 companies across 40 U.S. states.
