Investing.com -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) and the U.S. Air Force have successfully completed a separation test of the Stand-In Attack Weapon (SiAW) from an F-16 aircraft.
The test was conducted to validate the flight safety and aerodynamic performance of the SiAW missile, marking an important milestone toward its integration with fifth-generation platforms like the F-35. The successful separation demonstrates the system's design maturity.
"The separation test of SiAW from the F-16 is intended to provide the United States Air Force validation of the weapon's safe separation characteristics and also generate invaluable data for optimizing its performance," said Col. Gary E. Roos, senior materiel leader, Adaptive Weapons Division, Air Force Life Cycle Management Center.
Chuck Johnson, vice president of advanced weapons at Northrop Grumman, called the test "a key step forward for the SiAW program," adding that insights from the separation test will help continue missile development and deliver a critical capability to warfighters.
The SiAW is an air-to-ground strike missile designed to engage time-sensitive, high-value threats in contested environments. It expands the U.S. Air Force's target capabilities to include heavily defended land targets.
The missile utilizes digital engineering and features open architecture interfaces that allow for rapid subsystem upgrades to incorporate enhanced capabilities. SiAW is part of Northrop Grumman's portfolio of advanced weapons, which includes armaments, components, missiles, electronics and interceptors.
Northrop Grumman stock was up 0.2% in Thursday's premarket trading.
