Investing.com -- NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) set a quantum computing milestone on Monday, completing a 104-qubit simulation of a fault-tolerant quantum processor on JUPITER, Europe’s first exascale supercomputer, in what researchers are calling the largest comprehensive simulation of a fault-tolerant quantum computing system ever run.
The simulation was run using NVIDIA’s cuQuantum software and the CUDA-Q platform’s fault-tolerant logical layer on the JUPITER system hosted at Jülich Supercomputing Centre in Germany. Its central achievement is validating magic state cultivation, a fault-tolerant approach that requires 90% fewer physical qubits than traditional distillation methods. Traditional distillation protocols consume 90% to 95% of a quantum computer’s entire physical qubit budget just to produce the T-states needed for universal computation; cultivation replaces that overhead with a smaller, localized code-switching technique, dramatically shrinking the hardware footprint required to build a useful machine.
Prior groundbreaking work from Jülich had simulated only 50 qubits, and crucially did so under ideal, noiseless conditions. Monday’s result models magic-state cultivation under realistic hardware noise, giving researchers a quantitatively grounded tool to predict how future quantum processor designs will actually behave before any hardware is built. NVIDIA says that capability can cut years off the development cycle by replacing hardware trial-and-error with simulation-guided design.
"Useful quantum computing will require fantastically complex, fault-tolerant systems, and understanding how they behave at scale is essential to building them," said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, in a statement published on the NVIDIA blog. "Our results from Jülich show how quantum processors and GPU supercomputers can work together to tackle research that would otherwise be out of reach."
Kristel Michielsen, director of the Jülich Supercomputing Centre at Forschungszentrum Jülich, added: "Working with NVIDIA, we’re bringing that capability to quantum computing, helping scientists make better-informed decisions about the designs most likely to deliver useful applications."
Development for the JUPITER project began on an NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 system at the NVIDIA Accelerated Quantum Research Center (NVAQC), where the team scaled tests from 4 GPUs to hundreds before committing workloads to JUPITER’s full 8,192-GPU configuration. That staged approach compressed what had been weeks of simulation work into days, according to NVIDIA’s blog post.
Monday’s announcement arrives alongside two separate but related milestones from competitors that underscore how quickly the fault-tolerant quantum field is moving. Google Quantum AI published results in Science on Friday, October 16, demonstrating the first physical hardware implementation of magic state cultivation on its Willow superconducting processor, achieving a 40-fold error reduction and T-state logical fidelity of 99.99(1)%, per quantumcomputingreport.com. Separately, Quantinuum (NASDAQ: QNT) announced Monday a world-record quantum error-correction result on its Helios commercial system, achieving logical fidelity of 99.9995%, a 10x improvement, as it targets a universal fault-tolerant machine it calls Apollo by 2029. The convergence of simulation and hardware results in a single session signals that fault-tolerant quantum computing is transitioning from theoretical roadmaps to experimentally validated milestones across multiple architectures.
For NVIDIA, the commercial implications rest on whether cuQuantum and CUDA-Q become the standard simulation and development environment that quantum hardware makers rely on, in the same way CUDA became foundational for deep learning. No timeline has been announced for making the fault-tolerant simulation tools publicly available to external quantum hardware partners.
NVDA shares are trading at $217.42, up 1.54% in Monday’s session, according to Investing.com data.
