NATO defenses shield Turkey as Iran conflict spills into alliance territory

Investing.com -- NATO forces intercepted a ballistic missile fired from Iran toward Turkish airspace on Wednesday, marking the first instance of the alliance defending a member state from an Iranian projectile since hostilities between the United States, Israel and Iran began last week.

"A ballistic munition fired from Iran, which was detected heading toward Turkish airspace after crossing Iraqi and Syrian airspace, was timely engaged and neutralized by NATO air and missile defense elements deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean," the ministry said in a statement dated March 4.

Debris from the interceptor munition fell in the Dortyol district of Hatay province after the threat was destroyed in the air. The debris was confirmed to belong to the air defense interceptor, not the incoming missile. No casualties or injuries were reported.

The area where debris from the interceptor fell is located approximately 60 miles east of Turkey’s Incirlik Air Base, where the US has maintained military assets in the past.

"We remind all parties that we reserve the right to respond to any hostile actions against our country," the defense ministry said. "We warn all parties to refrain from actions that would lead to further escalation of conflicts in the region."

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke with his Iranian counterpart after the incident, warning against actions that would allow the conflict to spread further across the region, according to Turkey’s NTV television.
