Mexico's Sheinbaum denies consulates involved in U.S. politics

Investing.com -- Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum rejected claims on Friday that Mexican consulates in the United States are engaging in political activities or promoting an anti-American agenda.

Speaking at her daily morning press conference, Sheinbaum described the suggestion as "completely false" following the U.S. Department of State's decision on Thursday to launch a review of more than 50 Mexican consulates operating in the country.

"The suggestion that Mexican consulates are engaging in politics in the United States is completely false. What the consulates do - which is their role, just like that of the U.S. consulate in Mexico or those of other countries - is simply to protect their citizens," Sheinbaum said.

The Mexican president stated that the consulates' function is limited to assisting and protecting Mexican nationals, comparing their operations to those of U.S. consulates in Mexico and diplomatic missions of other countries.
