Matternet, SoftBank Robotics America Partner to Accelerate Drone Delivery Rollout
Investing.com -- Drone logistics firm Matternet has entered into a strategic partnership with SoftBank Robotics America aimed at speeding up the deployment of autonomous aerial delivery networks across key industries, including healthcare, retail, and enterprise logistics.
The collaboration brings together Matternet’s drone delivery platform with SoftBank Robotics America’s experience in scaling and commercializing emerging technologies. The companies said the alliance is designed to help businesses overcome mounting challenges in last-mile delivery, such as labor shortages, rising operational costs, traffic congestion, and increasing expectations for faster service.
Autonomous drone delivery is increasingly being positioned as a complementary logistics layer that can reduce reliance on ground transportation while improving delivery speed and consistency. The two companies plan to initially target sectors where timing and reliability are critical, particularly healthcare and commercial delivery.
As part of the agreement, SoftBank Robotics America will support the rollout of Matternet’s systems by handling manufacturing, installation, and maintenance of ground infrastructure. The companies aim to offer a comprehensive, end-to-end solution for enterprise customers looking to integrate drone delivery into their operations.
Matternet, which has conducted tens of thousands of commercial drone flights across the United States and Europe, has been among the early movers in the sector. It was the first company to secure both Type Certification and Production Certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, marking a key regulatory milestone for the commercialization of drone delivery services.
Matternet founder and CEO Andreas Raptopoulos said the partnership reflects a broader shift toward autonomous systems in logistics. “As we enter the age of Physical AI, Matternet’s vision of building autonomous networks that move atoms is becoming a reality,” he said, adding that the collaboration would help expand critical delivery infrastructure across industries.
From SoftBank Robotics America’s side, executives emphasized that the challenge now lies less in developing the technology and more in deploying it at scale. "Our role is to help integrate and scale platforms like Matternet in real-world delivery environments," President and General Manager Brady Watkins added.
"By combining Matternet’s technology with our global commercialization capability and experience, we are creating a powerful partnership to bring the benefits of autonomous drone delivery into day-to-day operations for vertical markets, "Vice President of New Ventures Katya Akudovich added.
The partnership comes as drone delivery continues to gain traction globally, driven by advances in automation, regulatory approvals, and growing demand for faster, more flexible logistics solutions.
