MSG Sports board clears spin-off of Rangers from Knicks business

Investing.com -- Madison Square Garden Sports Corp (NYSE: MSGS) has formally cleared the path to separate its two flagship franchises, announcing Wednesday that its board of directors approved the spin-off of the New York Rangers business from its New York Knicks operations. The transaction, expected to close on October 26, 2026, will dismantle the combined holding structure in favor of two pure-play public sports entities.

Following the tax-free distribution, the parent company will rebrand as MSG Knickerbockers Corp. and trade under the ticker "MSGK," anchoring its portfolio around the NBA franchise and its G League affiliate. The newly formed MSG Rangers Corp. will take ownership of the NHL franchise, the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, and the MSG Training Center, with shares scheduled to trade on the NYSE under the symbol "MSGR". Executive Chairman and CEO James L. Dolan will retain executive leadership over both independent corporations.

The separation strategy aims to unlock distinct equity valuations for the underlying franchises, allowing investors to target basketball and hockey operations independently. Under the approved distribution mechanics, stockholders of record as of October 20, 2026, will receive one share of MSG Rangers common stock for every two shares of MSG Sports held.

Ahead of the final distribution, "when-issued" trading for MSG Rangers is slated to commence on October 21, 2026, alongside "ex-distribution" trading for the renamed Knickerbockers entity. Final execution of the transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions, including effectiveness of its registration statement, tax opinion validation, and formal approval from both the NBA and NHL.

Investors responded positively to the final board authorization, pushing MSG Sports stock nearly 2% higher in extended trading on Wednesday. Wall Street advisory teams J.P. Morgan and Sullivan & Cromwell LLP are providing financial and legal counsel on the corporate restructuring.
