Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has announced a multimillion-dollar investment to develop a Modular Payload Delivery System (MPDS) for hypersonic missions, according to a company press release dated Aug. 11, 2026.

The MPDS is designed to convert existing hypersonic missile body technologies into a modular framework, allowing diverse payloads to be integrated with minimal system impact. The system is intended to support both offensive and defensive missions, including deep long-range strike and missile defense applications.

According to Lockheed Martin, the modular design reduces non-recurring engineering time and costs associated with integrating new hypersonic payloads. The company also stated that streamlined assembly, integration, testing, and manufacturing automation are intended to reduce labor hours and speed up delivery times.

Johnathon Caldwell, Lockheed Martin vice president and general manager of Strategic and Missile Defense Systems, said: "By investing in a modular payload delivery system built upon our proven hypersonic technologies and legacy, we're expanding operational utility, delivering affordability and accelerating advanced capabilities that would be historically burdened by development timelines and challenges."

The company stated the MPDS is built on flight-tested hypersonic technologies and is aligned with what it described as the Department of War's Scaled Hypersonics Critical Technology Area and munitions acceleration initiative. Lockheed Martin is headquartered in Bethesda, Md., and trades on the New York Stock Exchange.
