Lavrov and Rubio meet at UN to discuss Ukraine and bilateral ties
Investing.com -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Wednesday to discuss the war in Ukraine, Middle East issues, and bilateral relations on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said the two officials held a "detailed exchange" during their talks.
Lavrov pointed to "coordination" between Ukraine's leaders and their "European backers" as well as Ukrainian attacks on targets beyond its borders, according to the ministry statement.
The ministry said a thorough examination was made of what it called Kyiv's destructive actions and deliberate strikes on civilians and cross-border infrastructure sites, which Moscow claims is destabilizing world energy markets.
Russia remains committed to achieving the aims of its "special military operation" in Ukraine, the statement said. The ministry indicated this includes a resolution of the conflict that takes into account what Moscow describes as the "root causes" of its invasion.
Lavrov emphasized the need to quickly improve bilateral relations with prospects for closer economic cooperation, the ministry said.
The statement noted this would require an honest dialogue about eliminating "irritants" and bringing the functioning of the diplomatic missions of the two countries back to normal, including the return of Russian property in the US that was effectively confiscated.
