Kremlin says it would welcome Rubio-Lavrov meeting in Manila
Investing.com -- The Kremlin said on Monday it would welcome a meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Manila this week during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations gathering.
Rubio, who is visiting Manila from July 19-23, said over the weekend he would be prepared to meet Lavrov during ASEAN-related events, though he indicated uncertainty about whether such a meeting had been confirmed.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday that Moscow favors contact between the two foreign ministers.
"Contacts through the ministries of foreign affairs and diplomatic channels are of course largely of a technical nature, but if there were to be contact at the level of foreign ministers, we would certainly welcome it," Peskov said.
Peskov also stated that no communications between the Kremlin and the White House have occurred in recent days.
