Italy's Meloni seeks to normalize US relations after Trump spat

June 23, 2026 1:01 PM EDT

Investing.com -- Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said today that relations with the United States need to return to normal after a public dispute with President Donald Trump last week.

Meloni told reporters during an interview at an event in Rome that she does not intend to continue fueling the disagreement.

The conflict began Friday when Meloni accused Trump of fabricating a story about her. The U.S. president had told an Italian TV channel that she had "begged" him to take a photo with her at a recent G7 summit in France.

Meloni said Italy's foreign policy will remain unchanged following the disagreement with Trump. She added that she does not expect the dispute to negatively affect the Italian economy.

The Italian prime minister and Trump were previously considered close allies before the public falling out.
