Italy’s Meloni said to consider April election amid falling support
Investing.com -- Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is considering calling a general election as early as April, several months before the required deadline at the end of 2027, according a Bloomberg report Tuesday citing people familiar with the matter.
Meloni is concerned that her approval rating could decline further if she delays the vote, the report said. An election held late in 2027 would also leave limited time for a new government to approve the annual budget, which must be passed by the end of the year.
The prime minister has reportedly discussed this option, among other plans, with the office of President Sergio Mattarella, who has authority over dissolving parliament and calling new elections.
Meloni has faced mounting pressure since March, when she lost a referendum on justice reform. The defeat led to the removal of three of her officials. Since then, the far-right National Future party has risen in polls and has criticized the prime minister for adopting positions that are too centrist.
Meloni and U.S. President Donald Trump have also been in an ongoing public dispute that intensified after the recent G7 summit. Trump said Meloni "begged" him for a photograph to help her declining popularity. Meloni responded by releasing a video in which she called the claims "completely fabricated" and said that "neither I nor Italy ever beg."
