Huawei predicts AI agents to dominate global token traffic by 2035

Investing.com -- Huawei said on Wednesday that autonomous agents will represent more than 90% of global AI token traffic by 2035, requiring major increases in computing power and new security systems to manage independent software.

The Chinese technology and telecommunications company stated that annual consumption of AI tokens, which are units that models process when receiving and generating information, will rise sharply over the next decade. This growth will come as agents continuously monitor their surroundings, reason, make decisions and use external tools.

The forecast appears in Huawei's "Intelligent World 2035: Turning Vision into Action" report. The document does not call for slowing AI development. It assumes agent capabilities and deployment will expand significantly and identifies security and privacy protection for autonomous agents as one of 10 technologies needed to support this growth.

The report builds on Huawei's earlier projection that 900 billion AI agents could be active globally by 2035, roughly 100 times the projected human population.

Huawei said moving AI into the physical world would be essential to achieving artificial general intelligence, or AGI, which refers to systems able to perform a broad range of tasks at or beyond human levels.

The company launched an autonomous security-operations platform in April that uses sensing and enforcement agents to detect and respond to cyber threats. Huawei has also published proposals for AI firewalls designed to protect enterprise AI systems.

Guo Ping, chairman of Huawei's supervisory board, told employees in remarks released on Tuesday that the company views AI as its "biggest opportunity" and wants its computing infrastructure to become China's equivalent of U.S. chipmaking company Nvidia.
