Hassett rules out new agency for AI oversight
Investing.com -- The Trump administration does not plan to create a new government agency to oversee advanced artificial intelligence models, White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said Monday.
Hassett told CNBC that officials are working with the private sector to ensure AI models do not cause significant harm before public release. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles are leading the coordination efforts.
The comments follow a Bloomberg report last week about a draft executive order that could modify existing cybersecurity information-sharing programs to include AI companies and address emerging technology threats.
President Donald Trump has not decided whether to issue an executive order or maintain the current oversight system, Hassett said. He noted that substantial progress has occurred in recent weeks through collaboration between government and private sector representatives.
