Greenland leader pushes back on Trump's 'piece of ice' remark

Investing.com -- Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen responded Thursday to recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump, stating that Greenland represents a proud nation committed to maintaining global order.

Trump on Wednesday expressed frustration with NATO amid a crisis over the Iran war, calling the military alliance absent when needed. He referred to Greenland as a "BIG, POORLY RUN, PIECE OF ICE."

Nielsen said Trump's comments were unfortunate and emphasized that Greenland is not a piece of ice but a proud people. The prime minister stressed the importance of preserving the world order built since World War Two, with respect for international law and defense alliances.

Diplomatic talks between Greenland, the United States and Denmark are ongoing, with more meetings planned, according to Nielsen. He declined to specify what is being discussed in the negotiations but expressed hope that a pragmatic solution benefiting all parties can be found.

Nielsen said Greenland is not ruling out increased defense cooperation with the U.S. He noted that Trump's desire to take over or control Greenland has not been taken off the table.
