France blocks Tesla FSD software over safety worries

July 23, 2026 12:49 PM EDT

Investing.com -- France announced its opposition to Tesla Inc's Full Self-Driving driver assistance software being used on roads across the European Union in its current form, citing safety concerns.

The French position marks the first public rejection by an EU government of a Dutch-led proposal to approve the technology for use throughout Europe.

Transportation Minister Philippe Tabarot outlined concerns about speeding and driver inattention in a video statement released on Wednesday.

"In France, we believe that, while this system brings a number of technological advances, the safety tradeoffs are not yet sufficient to justify authorisation in its current form," Tabarot said.

Tesla's Full Self-Driving system is a driver assistance technology that can accelerate, brake, and steer a vehicle while requiring the human driver to remain ready to take control.
