Investing.com -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration upgraded a defect investigation on Monday into certain Ford Motor Company vehicles due to potential timing belt failures that could cause a loss of power while driving.
The investigation covers 135,551 vehicles, including Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus and Ford EcoSport models equipped with 1.0L engines from model years 2014 through 2021.
The agency said the timing belt in these vehicles may fail and create an unreasonable safety risk. NHTSA received 355 incident reports alleging a low engine oil pressure warning light appeared just before drivers experienced a complete loss or reduction of power while driving.
The upgrade of the investigation indicates NHTSA is moving closer to potentially requiring a recall of the affected vehicles.
