FDA launches Operation TrialBlazer to accelerate drug research
Investing.com -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced today a series of measures designed to accelerate drug research timelines through a new initiative called Operation TrialBlazer.
The agency plans to introduce a pilot program that will connect drug sponsors with qualified research institutions, including academic medical centers and contract research organizations. The program aims to reduce the time between drug identification and first-in-human studies.
The FDA updated its guidance for early-stage studies, stating that a more phase-appropriate approach could reduce development time by six to 12 months for companies.
For late-stage development, the agency said drugmakers may be able to secure approval based on one rigorous, well-controlled pivotal trial combined with confirmatory evidence, rather than conducting multiple pivotal studies.
The FDA also created a new webpage that consolidates regulatory requirements, guidance documents, and examples in a single location. The resource is designed to assist smaller companies navigating the approval process.
A new Phase 1 Contact Center will provide real-time responses to questions about protocols, regulatory requirements, and other early-trial matters.
