FAA chief says air traffic control upgrade costs exceed funding

Investing.com -- The Federal Aviation Administration's first phase of air traffic control modernization will require billions of dollars more than the amount Congress authorized, according to the agency's leader.

Congress authorized $12.5 billion last year for air traffic control reforms, with $9 billion designated for air traffic modernization and $3.5 billion for facilities construction.

Bedford told a U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee hearing that the first phase will cost $16 billion. The FAA is covering the funding shortfall from its facilities and equipment budget.

The agency is seeking an additional $10 billion for the second phase of the modernization project.
