EU opened diplomatic channels with Kremlin in recent weeks, Costa says
Investing.com -- The office of European Council President Antonio Costa has established initial diplomatic contact with the Kremlin in recent weeks to open communication channels, an EU official said on Wednesday.
The contacts were described as "brief" and at the diplomatic level, with no substantive discussions taking place, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The official explained that the EU has specific interests that will need to be defended in any future scenario, making it important to have established diplomatic channels with Russia.
The official emphasized that the EU is not acting as a mediator and continues to support Ukraine in its efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace.
Costa has been coordinating closely with European leaders in recent weeks on possible engagement with Russia and issues to be discussed when the right moment comes, the EU official said.
