Darline Graham enters South Carolina Senate race
Investing.com -- Republican Senator Darline Graham announced Monday that she will run in November's midterm elections for the Senate seat previously held by her late brother, Lindsey Graham.
"I feel like I can do it, I feel an inner peace about it," Graham told Fox News host Sean Hannity in an interview excerpt broadcast Monday. "I'm in."
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appointed Graham, 62, last week to complete her brother's term. She received President Donald Trump's endorsement for the race on Friday.
"I asked Darline, for the Good of our Nation, to run," Trump said in a social media post. "I hope Darline does this, in that there would be nobody better to honor the legacy of her beloved brother, Lindsey."
Trump's backing holds substantial influence in party primaries, particularly in Republican-controlled states like South Carolina.
The vacant Senate seat represents an uncommon opening in South Carolina. Lindsey Graham and his predecessor, Strom Thurmond, occupied the seat for a total of 70 years. Multiple Republican candidates have begun positioning themselves for the primary.
Darline Graham will compete against South Carolina Representatives Ralph Norman and Russell Fry in the special GOP primary election scheduled for August 11.
