Cuba diplomat says US creating pretext to topple government
Investing.com -- Cuba's Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez said Wednesday that Washington is attempting to create a justification for removing the government in Havana, following a failed effort by US senators to restrict Donald Trump's authority to deploy military force against Cuba.
Rodríguez called it absurd for the United States to suggest the communist nation south of Florida represents a danger to the world's most powerful military.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox News this week that Cuba poses a national security threat by welcoming US adversaries. Washington has accused Havana of allowing Chinese and Russian forces to operate in the region.
Rubio stated the Trump administration will not permit a foreign military, intelligence, or security operation to function freely 90 miles from US shores.
In a post on X, Rodríguez rejected Rubio's statements, saying Cuba does not act as an aggressor, prevents its territory from being used against other nations, and maintains a record free of terrorism, international organized crime, and violence.
Trump has increased economic measures against the island of 10 million residents, implementing a comprehensive energy blockade that began in January. This followed the US detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and directives to Venezuela to stop fuel shipments to Cuba. Since the blockade started, only one Russian tanker has delivered crude oil to the island.
