Citi Names 2 Best Electric Utility Stocks Amid AI Agent Disruption Risk

October 12, 2026 9:13 AM EDT

Investing.com -- Citi analysts identified retail electricity companies best positioned to withstand potential disruption from AI agents that could compress industry margins, according to a new report examining the impact of Agentic AI on the economy.

The investment bank warned that AI agents could enable customers to seamlessly switch retail power providers, potentially eroding margin profiles and valuation multiples across the sector in the near term. This technology-driven price discovery could trigger market consolidation, though Citi noted that larger players appear better equipped to navigate the transition with tools designed to limit price discovery and deter customer switching.

Despite the disruption risks facing retail electricity businesses, Citi highlighted two major power companies as particularly well positioned to manage the challenges ahead:

1. Constellation Energy - The investment bank ranked Constellation Energy as the top retail electricity company positioned to handle potential AI-driven disruption. Citi believes the company has developed tools that can effectively limit price discovery and discourage customer switching, providing a competitive advantage as AI agents become more prevalent in the retail power market.

2. NRG Energy - Citi identified NRG Energy as another large player well equipped to navigate the evolving landscape. Like Constellation Energy, NRG is viewed as having the scale and capabilities necessary to implement strategies that protect against margin compression from AI-enabled customer switching.

The Citi analysis comes as artificial intelligence continues to reshape various sectors of the economy. The retail electricity market, which has traditionally relied on customer inertia and complex pricing structures, may face significant changes as AI agents make it easier for consumers to compare rates and switch providers with minimal effort.

While Citi anticipates short-term margin pressure across the retail power sector, the firm’s analysis suggests that market consolidation could follow, potentially benefiting larger, better-resourced companies that can invest in defensive technologies and customer retention strategies.

The investment bank’s focus on Constellation Energy and NRG Energy reflects their assessment of which companies have the strongest positioning to weather this technological shift in the retail electricity marketplace.
