Investing.com -- Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. removed jalapeños from several stores in Minnesota after the peppers were potentially linked to a salmonella outbreak that has affected 110 people in the state.
The restaurant chain removed the jalapeños from all locations that received the product while working with Minnesota health officials investigating the outbreak. Of 84 affected individuals available for interviews, 75 reported eating at a Chipotle restaurant.
The complete extent of the salmonella outbreak remains unknown. Additional states are involved in the investigation, and evidence suggests people became ill after eating at other restaurants as well, according to a spokesperson for Minnesota's health department.
Laurie Schalow, Chipotle's chief corporate affairs and food safety officer, said the company proactively removed the jalapeños and replaced them with products from different growers "upon learning of a potential Salmonella outbreak in the supply chain impacting several food service retailers."
The Minnesota health department said it is not concerned about Chipotle because the chain pulled the peppers. The department warned the outbreak could continue if the contaminated peppers are being served at other locations.
Chipotle shares traded roughly 7% lower on Tuesday following the news.
