ChatGPT once again growing at double digits amid AI competition

Investing.com -- OpenAI CEO Sam Altman informed employees that ChatGPT has resumed "exceeding 10% monthly growth," according to a CNBC report citing an internal Slack message posted Friday.

The company is preparing to launch "an updated Chat model" this week as it works to maintain its competitive edge against rivals like Google and Anthropic.

ChatGPT currently serves more than 800 million weekly users. The company had previously declared a "code red" in December to improve the chatbot, temporarily pausing several projects to focus on this initiative.

Altman also highlighted significant progress for OpenAI's coding product, Codex, which reportedly grew approximately 50% from the previous week. He described this growth as "insane" in his message to staff. Codex directly competes with Anthropic's Claude Code, which has gained substantial adoption over the past year.

Last week, OpenAI launched a new Codex model called GPT-5.3-Codex along with a stand-alone application for Apple computer users.

Meanwhile, Altman and CFO Sarah Friar have been meeting with investors as the company works to complete what could become a $100 billion fundraising round. During these private discussions, executives are emphasizing OpenAI's consumer strength, growing enterprise business, and compute access capabilities.

The company has been sharing charts during these meetings, including one that shows Codex gaining market share from Claude Code, the CNBC report added.

OpenAI expects fundraising discussions to intensify over the next two weeks. The company previously closed a $41 billion round in March, which included a $30 billion contribution from SoftBank and $11 billion from other investors.
