Canada-U.S. to continue trade talks after Carney lifted tariffs

Investing.com -- Canadian cabinet minister Dominic LeBlanc is traveling to Washington to meet with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, following Canada’s recent decision to remove most of its retaliatory tariffs on American goods.

LeBlanc, who leads US trade talks for Canada, told a French-language radio program on Monday: "We are looking, I hope, for an agreement that will put us in a better position than we are right now."

The minister mentioned that both sides have discussed "circumstances that are very interesting for the American government," though he did not provide specific details. LeBlanc emphasized that Canada would need to see improvements in its trade relationship with the US in return.

According to his office, LeBlanc is flying to Washington Monday night, with the meeting scheduled to take place in the coming days.

In a Bloomberg Television interview on Friday, LeBlanc expressed his belief that Canada’s decision to drop some retaliatory measures would help create a path toward a broader trade agreement with the Trump administration. This includes preparing for a potential renegotiation of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which is scheduled for joint review next year.

Despite these diplomatic efforts, LeBlanc noted that Canada has not yet received any indication that the Trump administration plans to reduce its 50% tariffs on foreign-produced steel and aluminum.
