Canada PM Carney denies retracting comments that irked Trump

Investing.com -- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney denied on Tuesday that he had retracted comments made last week that reportedly irritated U.S. President Donald Trump.

Carney confirmed he spoke with Trump on Monday but rejected U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's claim that he "was very aggressively walking back" remarks made during a speech in Davos.

When reporters asked if he had walked back the comments, Carney responded with a simple "No."

The Canadian Prime Minister said he told Trump "I meant what I said in Davos" and that Canada was responding to changes in U.S. trade policy.

According to Carney, the Monday conversation with Trump covered Canada's arrangement with China and opportunities to move forward on CUSMA (Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement).
