BYD outsold Tesla in two key European markets in 2025

Investing.com -- BYD Co. sold more electric vehicles than Tesla Inc. in Germany and the UK last year as the Chinese automaker continues its global expansion.

In Germany, BYD registered more than twice as many new vehicles in December as Tesla, according to data released Tuesday by the Federal Motor Transport Authority. For the full year, BYD’s car sales in Europe’s biggest EV market increased eightfold to 23,306 units, while Tesla’s dropped by nearly half to 19,390.

The Chinese manufacturer also outperformed Tesla in the UK, Europe’s second-largest market for plug-in cars. BYD, maker of the Dolphin hatchback, moved ahead of Tesla in September and ended 2025 with 51,422 registrations compared to Tesla’s 45,513.

Tesla has already lost its position as the world’s top seller of electric cars to BYD after reporting a 16% decline in fourth-quarter deliveries and its second consecutive annual sales drop. BYD continues to expand internationally even as growth has slowed in its home market amid a crackdown on discounting. The Chinese company delivered 2.26 million EVs in 2025 compared to Tesla’s 1.64 million.
