Investing.com -- AppLovin (NASDAQ: APP) stock fell 12% Wednesday while Unity Software (NYSE: U) dropped 10%, extending Tuesday’s declines as software names faced overwhelming negative sentiment across the sector.
The selloff intensified amid specific concerns related to disruption in the mobile advertising technology space. Investors appear worried about potential competitive threats from emerging AI-powered solutions that could reshape the mobile ad ecosystem.
According to industry publication Adexchanger, startup CloudX has reached general availability with a platform that aims to "rewire the mobile ad stack using AI agents." The company, co-founded by the same entrepreneurs who created MoPub and MAX, is leveraging large language model agents and "intelligent monetization" within a trusted execution environment.
CloudX’s approach positions the mobile ad stack more as programmable infrastructure rather than another AI-powered supply-side platform. The startup’s CEO and co-founder Jim Payne aims to automate much of the technical work typically handled by engineers and ad operations teams, potentially streamlining mobile ad monetization processes.
This development comes at a sensitive time for established mobile advertising technology companies like AppLovin and Unity, which derive significant revenue from their ad tech offerings. The prospect of disruptive new entrants with AI-focused solutions appears to be weighing on investor sentiment for these stocks.
The broader software sector also faced selling pressure Wednesday, compounding the specific concerns affecting mobile advertising technology providers.
