Amazon unveils quantum chip, aims to speed up commercial development

February 27, 2025 11:56 AM EST

Investing.com -- Amazon Web Services unveiled a prototype quantum computing chip, Ocelot, which it hopes will speed up its push toward a commercial quantum computer by up to five years.

The chip uses "cat" qubits, named after Schrödinger’s famous thought experiment, to improve error correction, a major hurdle in quantum computing.

AWS said the design allows one working "logical" qubit from just nine physical qubits, a step toward reducing the massive qubit counts needed for practical applications.

AWS joins rivals Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL)'s Google and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) in announcing recent advances in quantum computing, which promises breakthroughs in materials science and drug discovery. However, the timeline for a fully functional machine remains unclear.
