Amazon's Zoox to begin charging fares in Las Vegas next week

Investing.com -- Amazon.com Inc.'s Zoox robotaxi division will begin charging passengers on August 10 in Las Vegas, becoming the first autonomous vehicle service in the United States to operate without driver controls while collecting fares.

The company announced Wednesday that fares will be calculated using a base rate plus charges for distance and trip duration. Zoox did not disclose specific pricing details but said the full fare will be displayed to riders before they book.

Alphabet Inc.'s Waymo currently operates the largest commercial driverless ride-hailing service in the US. Waymo vehicles include a steering wheel and pedals, unlike Zoox's robotaxis. Tesla Inc. and Zoox are working to compete with Waymo's service.

In July, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration granted Zoox a temporary exemption to deploy up to 5,000 robotaxis on US roads over the next two years. The exemption also permits Zoox to charge riders per trip.

Zoox's robotaxi has driven more than 3 million miles on public roads. Before launching commercial service, the company transported 1 million riders in Las Vegas, San Francisco, Austin and Miami.
