Alphabet shares rise as Google pushes Gemini deeper into enterprise AI

October 8, 2026 8:50 AM EDT

Investing.com -- Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) shares rose 1% Thursday, outperforming a broader technology selloff, as Google Cloud highlighted the growing role of Gemini in enterprise workflows and pushed further into the increasingly competitive market for AI agents.

The stock gained even as Nasdaq 100 futures fell about 0.7%, with investors digesting a broader retreat in technology stocks amid rising Treasury yields and oil prices.

At its Gemini at Work 2026 event, Google Cloud is showcasing how its Gemini platform can move beyond answering questions to executing multistep tasks across an organization’s existing systems.

The strategy puts Google in direct competition with other major AI companies seeking to make autonomous agents a new layer of enterprise software. Gemini Enterprise already allows companies to build and deploy agents, connect them to corporate data and applications, and manage them with enterprise security and governance controls.

Google’s pitch is that Gemini can operate across the tools employees already use, while agents can coordinate more complicated workflows and draw on information from multiple enterprise systems.

Google Bets on Enterprise AI Adoption

The push comes as Google Cloud sees rapid adoption of its AI products.

Google said earlier this year that nearly 75% of Google Cloud customers were using its AI products, while more than 330 customers had each processed more than one trillion tokens over the prior 12 months.

Alphabet has since highlighted continued adoption of Gemini Enterprise, with nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies using the platform. The company has also pointed to growing demand for its agent-development tools, with its Agent Development Kit approaching 70 million downloads in the second quarter.

That adoption is increasingly important to the Alphabet investment story as investors look for evidence that the company’s heavy AI spending can translate into durable cloud growth and higher-value software revenue.

Google Cloud revenue grew 82% in Alphabet’s second quarter, according to the company, with AI infrastructure and AI solutions driving demand.

AI Agent Race Intensifies

The latest push comes as the technology industry increasingly shifts from generative AI that produces responses to agentic AI that can take action on a user’s behalf.

Google is competing from an enterprise position, leveraging its cloud infrastructure, Workspace products and large installed base of corporate customers. Anthropic, Microsoft, OpenAI and other AI companies are pursuing their own agent strategies, raising the stakes over which platforms become the operating layer for corporate AI.

Google is also emphasizing a multi-model approach, allowing enterprises to use different models and tools rather than locking workflows exclusively to a single AI system.

The company has expanded Gemini Enterprise into specialized applications for industries including financial services and legal, part of an effort to turn AI agents into recurring enterprise software workloads rather than standalone chatbot products. Google previously announced Gemini Enterprise for Legal with integrations aimed at law firms and legal professionals.

AI Infrastructure Becomes Part of the Investment Case

The expansion of agentic AI also increases demand for computing infrastructure, making Google’s custom AI chips an important part of the strategy.

Google unveiled its eighth-generation TPU family, including the TPU 8i, earlier this year, saying the chips deliver an 80% improvement in performance per dollar versus the prior generation. The company designed the systems specifically for workloads including large-scale inference and AI agents.

For Alphabet investors, the broader question is whether Google’s combination of models, cloud infrastructure and enterprise distribution can turn the rapid adoption of AI into sustained financial gains.

With Alphabet’s shares already having rallied this year, the market is increasingly looking beyond new AI model announcements and toward evidence of monetization — particularly through Google Cloud, where AI demand is translating into significant revenue growth.
